Sandnes Norway

Sandnes is a city and municipality in Rogaland County, Norway, and part of the Jæren region. Sandnes was separated from Høyland as its own municipality in 1860 and obtained city status the same year. On January 1, 1965, the rural townships of Høyland and Høle, as well as parts of Hetland, were merged with Sandnes. The city takes its name from an old farm (“Sandnæs” in 1723), on whose land the town was built. The first element, “sand,” means sand or beach, and the last element, “nes,” means tip or headland. The coat of arms was granted on April 21, 1972, and the shield shows a piece of pottery, reflecting pottery as one of the major local industries in the 18th century.
