Sandnes Norway

Sandnes is a city and municipality in Rogaland County, Norway, in the Jæren region. It was separated from Høyland as its own municipality in 1860, gaining city status the same year. On 1 January 1965, the rural townships of Høyland and Høle, as well as parts of Hetland, were merged with Sandnes. The city takes its name from an old farm (“Sandnæs”, recorded in 1723), on whose land the town was built. The first element, “sand”, means sand or beach; the last element, “nes”, means headland or tip. The coat of arms was granted on 21 April 1972 and shows a piece of pottery, reflecting pottery as one of the major local industries in the 18th century.
