Information about the area
Bandung, IndonesiaBandung is the capital of the West Java province in Indonesia, and Greater Bandung, which consists of 2 municipalities and 38 districts, is the country's second largest metropolitan area with a population of 8,199,892 according to 2014 data from the Badan Pusat Statistik. It is the fourth largest city in the nation by land area, and the third largest by population within the city proper, with over 2.4 million residents. Situated 768 meters (2,520 feet) above sea level and approximately 140 kilometers (87 miles) southeast of Jakarta, Bandung experiences cooler temperatures year-round compared to most other Indonesian cities. The city is located in a river basin surrounded by volcanic mountains, a topography that served as a natural defense system and was the main reason for the Dutch East Indies government's plan to relocate the colony capital from Batavia (now Jakarta) to Bandung.
In the 18th century, the Dutch colonials established tea plantations around the mountains, and a road was built to connect the plantation area to the colonial capital Batavia (180 kilometers or 112 miles to the northwest). The Dutch residents of Bandung requested the establishment of a municipality (gemeente), which was granted in 1906, leading to Bandung's development into a resort city for plantation owners. Luxurious hotels, restaurants, cafes, and European boutiques were opened, earning the city the nickname Parijs van Java (Dutch for "The Paris of Java").
After Indonesia gained independence in 1945, Bandung underwent rapid development and urbanization, transforming from a peaceful town into a densely populated metropolitan area with 16,500 people per square kilometer, providing living space for over 8.2 million people. Natural resources have been heavily exploited, especially through the conversion of protected upland areas into highland villas and real estate. Despite facing numerous challenges, such as waste disposal, flooding, a complex traffic system, and inadequate road infrastructure, Bandung continues to attract a large number of tourists, weekend visitors, and migrants from other parts of Indonesia.
