Lugo is a city in Galicia and is the only city in the world to be surrounded by completely intact Roman walls, which reach a height of 10 to 15 m along a 2,117 m circuit ringed with 71 towers. The walkway along the top forms a continuous loop and features ten gates. These 3rd‑century walls are protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The bridge over the Miño River is essentially of Roman origin, although many repairs over the centuries have largely effaced its Roman character. Inside the walls, the city preserves quiet pedestrian streets, large squares, and spacious gardens, where buildings such as the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, and City Hall stand out. The historic quarter also contains some of the best restaurants in Galicia, where visitors can sample the excellent fresh meats and fish that have earned Lugo’s cuisine widespread recognition.
