Abu Simbel Egypt

The Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock-cut temples in the village of Abu Simbel in Nubia, southern Egypt, near the Sudanese border. They stand on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km (143 miles) southwest of Aswan (around 300 km/186 miles by road). The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Nubian Monuments,” which extends from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae near Aswan. Carved directly into the mountainside in the 13th century BC during the 19th Dynasty of Pharaoh Ramesses II, the twin temples were built as a lasting monument to the king and his queen Nefertari and to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Their colossal exterior rock-cut statues have become world-famous icons. In 1968, the entire complex was moved to an artificial hill on a domed, man‑made structure high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir. This massive engineering project was necessary to save the temples from being submerged by the rising waters of Lake Nasser, the vast artificial lake created after the construction of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile.
