Brno, Czech Republic

Brno Czech Republic

Brno, the Czech Republic’s second-largest city, offers a rich mix of culture and fascinating sights. The capital of Moravia is a beautiful, charming place that still manages to feel like a small town. The city is ringed by lovely mixed woodlands, providing plenty of opportunities for walking, tourism and cycling. The centre itself is very compact, and you can comfortably see the main sights in a single day. Looking down over Brno is the magnificent Špilberk Castle, whose history is truly intriguing. Today it also houses the Brno City Museum and offers superb views over the city and the surrounding countryside. The biggest eye-catcher in Brno’s old town is Stará radnice, the Old Town Hall, a splendid building where you can see two much‑loved Brno symbols: the Brno Dragon (Brněnský drak) and the Wheel. Náměstí Svobody, or Freedom Square, is the city’s main square – a lovely spot for a wander or to sit with a drink at one of the many cafés and watch the world go by. The square’s original appearance changed significantly after major redevelopment at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, when a number of buildings were rebuilt in neo‑Renaissance style. Its most striking feature today is the Baroque Plague Column dating from 1679. This charming city is a key base for visitors keen to explore the natural and cultural treasures of the South Moravian region. Modern Brno is home to several universities and major judicial institutions, and offers a wide range of cultural experiences in its many theatres, museums, cinemas and clubs.
